Speaking on the single, DAWN OF OUROBOROS comments: “The ocean has always been a major inspiration for us as a band, but this song is the first where we’ve directly composed something about it. Particularly, it’s about the chemical process found in many deep-sea animals called bioluminescence.

“We wanted the title track to be an introduction to the more adventurous vibe of the overall album. To create something that pushed ourselves into a more progressive area of our creativity, while still maintaining the emotional intensity and melodic sensibilities the represents the qualities of our music that are so important to us as a band.”

Creatively spearheaded by guitarist Tony Thomas (also of Botanist) and vocalist Chelsea Murphy, DAWN OF OUROBOROS conjures up an atmospheric blend of black and death metal. Whilst Chelsea’s distinctive vocals both scathe and soothe, there is a vicious underpinning of progressive and propulsive extremity that unites their sound into something cohesive and alluring. Outside the band, Tony works as a molecular biologist – his thorough and research driven approach to his job carries over to the way he creates within the band. In contrast, Chelsea frequently improvises her vocal parts in the studio, allowing pure emotion to guide the development of lyrical concepts and delivery.

Writing for Bioluminescence started before their sophomore album, Velvet Incandescence, had even hit the streets; never ones to rest on their laurels, DAWN OF OUROBOROS were already feeling out their next steps and embracing their most adventurous songwriting journey to date. The album is peppered with odd time signatures and built from unorthodox song structures that draw from jazz influences as much as they do from any extreme metal inspirations.

Lyrically inspired by nature and more specifically on Bioluminescence, inspired by the ocean, the flora, fauna and alchemical magic of the sea provides a rich seam of poetic beauty for the band to explore. “Much like emotion, bioluminescence is a vibrant reaction to things in its environment,” Chelsea comments. The contrast of harsh black metal shrieks and smooth, jazzesque moments mirrors the untamable nature of the ocean.

An abyssal, claustrophobic thread runs through to the sound of the album itself – expanding and contracting as the songs undulate and pulsate. Bioluminescence was primarily self recorded before the mixing was handled by Lewis Johns at The Ranch in Southampton, UK, and mastering by Grant Berry at Fader Mastering in Manchester, UK. Additional engineering was then completed by Nick Loiacono at Fang Studios in San Mateo, before the ethereal artwork was crafted by Alex Eckman Lawn.

DAWN OF OUROBOROS are illuminating the path forward as they approach the release of Bioluminescence. Once again they find themselves with much to celebrate as an even brighter future beckons.
